'Bumps', a new photobook and exhibition by photography duo Lola & Pani, captures the complicated, captivating essence of youth.
The culmination of ten years of photography, this project, co-curated with Alastair Mckimm, came together organically.
The London-based pair, who work across documentary, portraiture, and fashion photography, have been collaborating for many years thanks to a shared aesthetic and sensibility—namely, a focus on "sentimental narratives that provide an authentic, personal insight into the worlds of those they photograph". The theme of youth has been central to much of their work, but this series is more personal than anything they have created together previously.
The people portrayed in 'Bumps' - mostly friends-of-friends or individuals Pani met while out skating—were chosen as they reminded the photographers of their younger selves in one way or another, as to 'create a more personal narrative'.
The beautifully shot portraits, featuring both individuals and pairs, are thoughtfully paired with images of natural scenes and details. All were captured on medium format film, utilizing subtle light and analog tones in both color and black and white. The result, is a soft, intimate, visual poetry that captures the complexities and contradictions of adolescence.
Youth is a frequently explored theme in photography, with its nostalgic reflection on the past being a fundamental aspect of the human experience. Yet, despite this, "Bumps" stands as both a unique and compelling collection that invites viewers to reflect on their own transience and fading youthfulness.
"Bumps" is published by Palm Studios and is available via their website.
Images from the series are on display at 10-14 Gallery, London until Friday 14th June. More info here.
