Nathan Appleyard’s photography possess the capacity to foster unity among individuals

2023-07-04 – The Process

Community

Nathan Appleyard's photography revolves primarily around the themes of community and travel. The art form, in his perspective, possesses the capacity to foster unity among individuals and cultivate a sense of belonging. Nathan views travel as a precious opportunity to capture the enchantment of varied destinations and celebrate the shared human experiences that unfold within them.

As part of our online content we believe that discussing the efforts, approach and process behind the project are just as important as the story itself. In our category The Process we ask a series of questions that discuss and explore the approach taken in different aspects of creating, looking at new and old projects, we explore the stories, thoughts, meanings and process behind it all from how a project starts, exploring inspirations and reasoning behind work, to the experiences and mindset of developing a project.

How do you start a project?
The approach can vary, sometimes by looking through my pictures and identifying themes that could be expanded on or as simple as being location based whilst travelling.

Do you think creativity is innate or learned?
I think creativity is a skill that can be learned and developed over time.

Who or what experiences have inspired your work?
My experience as an Art Director has driven me to develop my own photography practice. Being constantly immersed in research around fashion, interiors, travel and storytelling encourages me to continue my own work and exploration.
Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
I would like my work to convey a positive message where it can, one that celebrates community and a sense of adventure.

If you could change one aspect of our society through your work, what would it be?
To encourage everyone to value the importance of community, and to embrace the vibrancy of the diverse communities around us.
When do you feel most inspired?
I feel most inspired when immersing myself in new environments and experiences whilst travelling, whether that’s for work or on holiday. I am also inspired by discovering new creatives doing exciting work.

How much of your own life is reflected in your work?
At the moment, quite a lot. I have an ongoing project capturing individuals within my local area, and I’m currently working on a small book containing a series of images made whilst rediscovering parts of Vietnam where I lived for a couple of years teaching English before coming to London. I hope that by including elements of my own life I create an authentic connection with the viewer.

What is your favourite accomplishment?
For my photography practice, it has been rewarding to see my work out there a bit more. Seeing my personal work start to be featured in print or exhibited was a great turning point. As it isn’t my day job, I don’t have as much time as I would like to dedicate to it and so it always nice when a photo or series gets picked up somewhere.

Who is the most creative person that you have ever known?
I’m not sure of one person specifically, but I’ve been lucky enough to know and work with a variety of creatives across design, illustration, painting, photography and much more. I also have a creative family, so there are too many to choose from!
